On November 14, 1968 Edcouch-Elsa was thrust into the national spotlight when Mexican-American students from both the high school and junior high school walked out of class in protest. They were seeking redress for unfair treatment by teachers and administration, the dilapidated conditions of their schools, and for the punishment recived for speaking Spanish in school. The events that followed the protest would have lasting effects on the community By no means I am an expert on this topic. On the contrary, my knowledge is limited but I do possess the ability to recognize the historical importance of the event. My purpose in this webpage is to preserve these primary resources and make them available on the world wide web so that others may know of the events that unfolded in Edcouch-Elsa. |
