Region dominated mostly by the Coahuiltecan Indian tribes. Life was not very easy considering the rugged terrain and harsh climate. |

Food scarcity forced the Coahuiltecan indians to lead a nomadic life of hunters and gathers. |

Cabeza de Vaca is officially recognzied as the first European to have visited the RGV in the 1530s. |

As more Spanish flooded the area, their influence dominated the lifestyle of many of the locals. |

The Spanish soon began to grant the land to Spanish nobles for a variety of reasons. A large portion of the RGV was sold to Juan Jose Ynojosa de Balli. |

The main form of income for the region became ranching. Partially because farming was not profitable given the lack of an adequate irrigation system. |

Battles and Wars prove to be difficult times for the Hispanic residents living in the RGV region. |

Texas Rangers also make life for Hispanics difficult |

Ownership of the RGV changes and eventually is broken up. |

Soon ranch life becomes less popular as better irrigation makes farming more profitable |

Farming along with great marketing made the RGV a very appealing place to live. |

Soon, many people began to move to the region causing the massive growth. |

Growth in population would eventually entice the railroad companies to expand their lines into the RGV. |

One of the major lines was to run between to the bigger cities in the valley--Edinburg to Harlingen. |
