As some of you may have already seen from my AP Collegeboard updates, it was announced that the AP HuG test will be offered online at home. It is going to last 45 minutes, and will consist of FRQs. I know today is NOT Friday, but we will be working on a practice FRQ. The FRQ is geared towards reviewing the conepts of Site and Situation. Be sure to carefully read the explanation on the first page, then complete the FRQ questions (A-G). In all honesty, I am not aware of how the FRQ (writing portion) of the newly revised 45-minute test version will go for this year, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Today, we will revisit Central Place Theory and apply the concept to the city of San Antonio. It may be best that also reivew the concept of urban hierarchy. Furthermore, we will also elaborate on the concept of an Edge-City. Coined by Joel Garreau, you will review the rules that make up an edge-city as well as the three distinct variety of edge-cities. Today, you will be using the textbook to continue our exploration of Unit 6: Cities & Urban Land Use. Our focus will be on Chapter 12: Services & Settlements. Read Key issues 1 and 2 which span from pg. 432-441. The reading will introduce the (3) three types of Service sectors (Consumer, Business, and Public). The reading will also serve as a refresher for Walter Christaller's Central Place Theory and the elements of Threshold and Range. Other topics that will be covered in the reading include the Urban Hierarchy, Rank-Size Rule, Primate Cities, Gravity Model, Food Deserts, and Periodic Markets. This reading will be the foundation for the next couple of assignments. There is no need to answer any questions for this reading, JUST READ! Naturally, the journey we will embark upon over the next couple of weeks (maybe even for the rest of the school year) is not an easy one. It requires a great deal of self-motivation and discipline on your behalf. There isn't anyone to check for understanding or answer questions (at least not immediately) about the content. Thus, you must not become discouraged and you must be willing to take on any and all challenges that you may encounter as we break away from the traditional sense of Education as we have known it. Let us embrace this challenge, keep things positive, and move forward with what NEEDS to get done. |
